“So how exactly did Calvary Chapel Community Church get started?” This is a question people occasionally ask. Perhaps you were wondering. If so, this section “Our History” will answer the question. It is all about our beginnings, and we believe every beginning – like a baby taking its first steps – is special and significant to God.

Calvary Chapel Community Church began in Cape Town in the late 1990’s. It was birthed out of prayer and a passion for a Bible-teaching church to be established in the heart of our city. We desired a church that would esteem Jesus as King of kings and Lord of lords; a church that would elevate His Word; a church that would be passionate about faith and prayer; and a church that would open its arms to people from all walks of life…

Our very first meetings were held on Sunday nights in a Green Point Coffee Shop in Chiappini St. The year was 1999. What initially drew us to this part of town were the many prostitutes, homosexuals, drunkards, and drug addicts in the area. Some of them were young teenagers. Knowing that Jesus came to “seek and to save that which is lost,” we immediately started to reach out to them. This took place mainly in the evenings along Green Point Main Road. Later we also began ministering in Woodstock, another needy area of Cape Town. Progress was mostly slow, sometimes risky, and at times very disheartening. However, God was blessing the outreaches and answering our prayers, and we saw Christ’s love break through in many lives. In less than two years a small church was born.

From 2001 to 2006, our numbers grew and Calvary Chapel began to be recognized as a real church in the city. We started a discipleship training school, student, youth and children’s ministries, and moved venue three times! Our present location is a school facility in Kloof Street, Gardens.

For us, one of the most exciting things about looking back on our history is seeing God at work in so many people’s lives. The Bible speaks of those whom the Lord has saved and delivered from the pit. We have witnessed this first hand in our church! Furthermore, we have learned to depend on Christ for all our needs. God has answered so many of our prayers. Prayers for young men and women to be delivered from sin. Prayers for healing. Prayers for church meeting venues. Prayers for helpers. Prayers for financial provision. Prayers for strength and perseverance. Prayers for wisdom and faith and vision. God has never once failed us, and we truly honor Him in this.

What does the future hold for Calvary Chapel Community Church? While we do have ministry dreams, ambitions, and visions, we can’t say for sure. But what we do know for certain is that the Lord is with us, He is faithful, and His promises are always 100% true!

“And you know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one thing has failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spoke concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one word of them has failed” (Joshua 23:14).
