“It’s not that I’m afraid of dying,” comedian Woody Allen once famously stated, “I just don’t want to be there when it happens!” Echoing similar sentiments at a graduation ceremony some time before his death, Steve Jobs, Apple’s former CEO and co-founder, said, “No one wants to die…and yet death is the destination we all share.”
For most of us death is not something we like to think or talk about. And yet, the fact is that one day you and I will die. Any day could be our last. This reality is what led Anaclet Mbayagu, a 40-year-old Immigration Consultant from Cape Town, to place his faith in God.
Throughout his child-hood, thoughts of dying filled Anaclet’s heart with apprehension and fear. “I don’t remember ever laughing or being happy as a child,” he says. “I had no relationship with God and no hope of ever going to heaven. This made me feel insecure and afraid.”
But when Anaclet’s mother turned to Christ and became a born-again Christian, the radical transformation he saw in her filled him with amazement and hope. “Virtually overnight I saw my mother change from a harsh, critical person to a loving and caring woman. I could not ignore what Jesus had done for her!”
Following her conversion, Anaclet’s mother started to challenge her son regarding his own need of salvation. He began to accompany her to church. On one particular Sunday morning, while at church with his mother, the Lord touched Anaclet in a real and personal way that he has never since forgotten. “As the pastor began to preach from the Bible, I felt like God was speaking directly to me. It was as if I was the only person there. The pastor even mentioned specific sins that I had been committing! I was convic-ted and asked Christ to save me. God answered, and at that very moment Jesus came into my life. My guilt left me, and my fear of death disappeared. For the first time I knew what it was to have peace and joy!”
While death is something that every person has to face, God has given us His Son and His promise of eternal life. Do you have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ? The Bible says: “For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God” (1Peter 3:18). To person-ally receive this promise of life, turn to Jesus by faith. It is that simple! God’s word declares: “Whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
