Who is Calvary Chapel?

Calvary Chapel Cape Town is a body of believers from all walks of life who desire to know the Lord Jesus Christ and to make Him known in an ever increasing measure. Our supreme desire is to grow in our understanding of God's Word and to be conformed to His image by the power of the Holy Spirit.

An emphasis is given to challenging lives to change through studying the Word of God, worshiping God in spirit and truth, and sharing the love of Jesus Christ with one another and others.

More About Us...

Pastor Chuck SmithPastor Chuck Smith

Calvary Chapel Cape Town is an affiliate church of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa (California, USA), pastored by Chuck Smith, who founded Calvary in the late 1960's. It was a time when most traditional churches were turning away the younger generation because of their long hair, the way they dressed, and their counter-culture lifestyle. Driven by a burden for that generation, Chuck and his wife Kay reached out to them with love and understanding and without compromise of Christian principles. A result of this outreach was the birthing of the "Jesus Movement" - a sweeping revival in which tens of thousands of young men and women were converted to Christ and became committed followers of the Lord.

Now, forty years later, with more than 1,000 affiliates internationally ministering to approximately half a million people, Calvary Chapels are still reaching out to the lost and attempting to love the unlovable. Around the world, Calvary Chapels are best known for their deep dedication to the expositional teaching of God's Word and the application of that Word to everyday life, while depending on the Holy Spirit's power to edify, equip and empower the believer.

Our Small Beginnings In Cape Town...

Having spent time in the 1990's under the ministry of Pastor Chuck Smith at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, and Pastor Bob Coy at Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale, Pastor Demitri and his wife Karen sensed the call of God to plant a Calvary Chapel fellowship in Cape Town, Africa's southernmost city and their place of birth. In 1999 they began ministering in the inner-city, mainly to men and women involved in prostitution, homosexuality, drug addiction, and to the homeless. Progress was slow and often discouraging; however over time their small Sunday night coffee shop Bible study group began to grow into a healthy body of believers eventually meeting together on Sunday mornings and during the week. A few years later, Calvary Chapel Cape Town was formally established as a church, and today continues to faithfully minister in the Calvary style, teaching the Word of God, and reaching out to the lost.

For us, one of the greatest privileges of the last few years has been to see our fellowship develop and mature from a handful of young believers to a thriving church of men, women and children, filled with God's Spirit, having a hunger for God's Word and a love for the lost. However, as we continue to grow, we need to remember our humble beginnings, knowing that it is God who builds His church, and as His disciples our goal is simply to reach out to our city with the gospel of Christ and the open arms of our loving Saviour. This is, after all, the heart and soul of true ministry.
