Our Model For Ministry

"Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers." - Acts 2:41-42

In the book of Acts God has given us a wonderful example to model our ministry upon. It is simple and biblical, and can easily be put into practice by any church today. In Acts 2:42 we are told that the believers continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers

From this scripture we can see that the early Christians prioritized four basic spiritual activities. They met together regularly as believers (i.e. fellowship); they studied the Word of God together (the apostle's doctrine); they Prayed together; and they Broke Bread together. As they continued steadfastly in these activities, God's blessing was apparent: The people feared God (Acts 2:43); mighty miracles were done (v43); needs were met (v44); there was joy and gladness (v46); and most importantly, people were being saved (v47). What a wonderful portrait of a healthy church!

Here at Calvary we have adopted the 'Acts model' as our model for church. Like the early believers, we gather together every week to study the Bible. Since it is first mentioned in Acts 2:42, we realize that this was a top priority in the Acts church, and so we place a great emphasis upon Bible teaching. First and foremost, Calvary Chapel is a Bible teaching church.

The Word Of God

Today many churches do not prioritize the teaching of God's Word. As a result their members are like the multitude Matthew spoke of who were "weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd" (Matthew 9:36). Where the word of God is not clearly taught or given first priority, you can be sure that the believers will be weak, weary, sick and scattered. As pastors, our first duty is to feed our sheep. Twice, in John 21, Jesus instructed Peter to feed His lambs and to feed His sheep, and as a church we are obligated to obey His words. At Calvary Chapel one of our highest goals is to make sure our sheep are fed and cared for.

People Of Prayer

Another goal we have is to be men and women of prayer. When we study the Word, God speaks to us. When we pray, we speak to God. Without prayer, something important would be missing in our relationship with God, and we would lack sufficient power to live the Christian life. Many times Jesus challenged His disciples to pray, and gave them frequent assurances of the power of prayer. It has been said, "A prayerless Christian is a powerless Christian, and a prayerless Church is a powerless Church." As we follow the Acts church, it is clear they gave much attention to prayer, and so this is another priority we have at Calvary.

Importance Of Fellowship

But when you read Acts 2, you will see that the early church did more than study the scriptures and pray. They also spent time fellowshipping and eating together (Acts 2:42). Although these may sound like non-essentials, they are not. From the very beginning, God never intended man to dwell on his own, and as believers God desires every one of us to be part of a local church body where we can interact and fellowship with other believers. In Galatians 6, Paul refers to the church as "the household of faith", a place where believing men and women may dwell together in love and unity. Although our church consists of people of different ages, languages, and cultures, we are bound together by our love for the Lord and for one another. As we state in our bulletin, Calvary Chapel is a fellowship of believers from all walks of life who have come together with the common vision of growing in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ.
