“Your prayer is heard” – Luke 1:13
Over the years I have read many inspiring books on the subject of prayer. Two especially stand out in my mind–Purpose in Prayer by E.M. Bounds and With Christ in the School of Prayer by Andrew Murray. Both books are written by godly pastors from the nineteenth century who have encouraged countless Christians to take up the ministry of prayer and intercession. In the church today, God is looking for men and women who will pray! He is looking for intercessors.
But what exactly is intercession? And what is an intercessor? In the Biblical sense, an intercessor is a believer who intercedes before God on behalf of another. The word intercede literally means “to move or to pass between”, and this is exactly what intercessors do by their prayers. They move between earth and heaven bringing the needs and problems of others before God. They seek His salvation for the lost, His blessings upon the Church, and His intervention in the affairs of man. God is looking for faithful Christian men, women, and children who will intercede before Him. Will you be an intercessor?
Looking back in history, God’s Spirit has turned many ordinary men and women into extraordinary intercessors. Their lives are an inspiration to us today. Consider Abraham praying for Sodom, Moses praying for Israel, Stephen praying for his persecutors, Paul praying for all the churches, John Knox praying for Scotland, Evan Roberts praying for Wales, Rees Howells praying for Europe, and John Hyde praying for India, pleading with God, “Give me four souls a day.”
Of course, our highest inspiration for intercessory prayer is Christ Himself. See how wonderfully His prayer on the night before His crucifixion touches our lives: “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word…” (John 17:20).
Today God is looking for intercessors. He is looking for Christians who will intercede. Will you allow Christ to use your prayers to touch the lives of those about you? Will you make the spiritual needs of others your business? Will you move between earth and heaven, bringing the needs of your church and the unsaved before God? Become an intercessor today!
