Walter Kohrs is born and bred in Africa. While he resides in a comfortable three bedroom suburban home in the Blouberg area, this adventure-loving tour guide could be equally at home in Sossusvlei or the Okavango. Founder of Safari Online, a web-based travel company, he has led tours to Lesotho, Swaziland, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Mozambique and Malawi.
But as much as Walter enjoys guiding tours, His real passion in life is helping others find faith in God. This passion began some years ago when the Lord rescued him from a sinful and difficult past. Walter explains: “When I was thirteen my parents got divorced. I started spending as much time away from home as I could and soon started drinking, smoking, doing drugs, and getting into sexual sin.
My father, broken over the divorce, turned to the Lord and received Jesus as his Saviour. He gave me Christian books to read to help me find Jesus as he had. Although these made an impression on me, I didn’t have the strength to turn from my sins.
One day, during my game ranger training the malaria medication I was taking affected me psycho-logically, and I began to hear voices in my head. It was terrifying! I tried phoning my father, but there was no reception. In desperation, I prayed to God, and started reading the Christian daily devotional book that my father had given me some time earlier. God gave me the assurance that He was in control and gave me an amazing peace during this time.
This experience sparked my interest to examine the truth of the Christian Faith. Reason and conviction led me to God. One night, seeing the ugliness of my sin in the light of God’s holiness, I fell on my knees, acknowledged my sin to Jesus, and cried out for forgiveness. That day in April 2001 my life was completely turned around. I experienced such joy and knew that I had become a new person.”
One of Walter’s favourite verses in the Bible is Isaiah 53:6. It says, “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.” On the cross, Jesus willingly carried the world’s sins. He was put to death. But He did not stay dead! Christ rose to life on the third day, and now offers eternal life to all who will believe on Him. Are you saved? You can be by turning from your sins and calling upon Jesus. The Bible says: “For whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved” (Rom. 10:13).
